Changelog

What changed in ThoughtFree, newest first.

  1. Android build 148

Use AI off now means off

    • New Settings, Privacy, Hide in recent apps shows a blank card in the app switcher instead of your thoughts. Screenshots still work. Needs Android 13 or newer, and it's on unless you turn it off.
    • New Settings, AI, AI activity lists every request that sent something of yours to an AI service in the last 35 days: when, what for, where it went and which thought it was about.
    • Fixed With Use AI off, no AI sees your thoughts. Brain, research, merging, book covers, AI automations and new category icons stop, and each says why.
    • Improved Turning Use AI off deletes the search index behind Brain. Turning it back on builds it again.
    • Improved With Use AI off, books sent to Kindle get a plain cover instead of a painted one.
    • Improved Voice notes are now turned into text in the EU.
    • Improved AI features now use servers in the EU first, where the model has them.
    • Fixed Deleting your account now removes every photo and file you attached.
    • Improved Phone backups no longer include your photos, recordings, exports or anything waiting to sync. Your account is the backup.
    • Improved The privacy page now lists every service that can receive your data, and when.
  2. Android build 145

Your diary keeps every device's entries

    • Improved Links, buttons and red text are easier to read in every theme. In dark themes, labels on coloured buttons are now dark.
    • Improved Settings pages that work through your account, such as AI, Notifications, Automations and Integrations, now say so when you're signed out, with a button to sign in.
    • Improved When something in Settings fails to load, there's now a Try again button.
    • Improved Calendar feeds moved into Integrations.
    • New Search on a computer (Ctrl+K) now finds settings, such as dark mode, export or Kindle.
    • Fixed With Use AI off, your thoughts are no longer sent to build Brain's search index.
    • Improved The Use AI switch now says where your thoughts go: to AI providers that don't train on them, and never your diary.
    • Improved Grey text across the app is darker and easier to read, in every theme.
    • Improved Settings is grouped more clearly, and each row shows its current state, such as whether AI or sync is on.
    • Improved Clear app data is now Delete all data. It says whether it deletes from your account and every device, offers to export first, and asks you to type delete when you're signed in.
    • Improved Start tab is now under Appearance, Tags under Categories, and Export and import share one row.
    • Improved Integrations now shows whether Health Connect is on, instead of "Local".
    • Fixed Turning off Use AI in Settings now also stops the weekly insight, so nothing is sent to AI while it's off.
    • Improved Clearer Settings: the AI switch is now called Use AI, and the Health Connect, Tags, Export, Categories and Google Calendar texts now say exactly what happens.
    • Improved The + button no longer covers controls on Settings pages.
    • Removed A design screen meant for development no longer appears in Settings.
    • Improved Food, drinks, activities, money and Thoughts added to the same day on two devices now all stay, even when one of them was offline at the time.
    • Improved Sleep, workouts, water and steps from Health Connect now reach your other devices without opening ThoughtFree on your phone. Turn on Fill in while ThoughtFree is closed on the Health Connect page.
    • Fixed A task's due date no longer runs past the edge of its card on a small phone with large text.
  3. Android build 139

    Widget entries reach every device

    • Improved A diary entry you add from the home-screen widget or the voice tile now shows on your other devices within seconds, even while ThoughtFree stays closed on your phone.
    • Improved Ticking off a task on the Today widget now shows as done on your other devices within seconds, without opening ThoughtFree on your phone.
    • Improved A note typed into the home-screen widget reaches your other devices even when ThoughtFree hasn't been opened for a while.
    • Improved A photo taken with the widget's Snap button reaches your other devices even when ThoughtFree hasn't been opened for a while.
  4. Android build 136

    Repeats wait for your tap

    • New Tap a category's icon and AI picks a new one from its name and description. Tap again for another. In Settings, under Categories, the new icon is saved straight away and Undo puts the old one back; in the category form, Save keeps it.
    • New Reading a thought, swipe left for the next one and right for the previous one. The arrows at the top still work.
    • Fixed Saying something like "every Tuesday" or "on a daily basis" in a note no longer turns it into a repeating list item. It stays in Thoughts and shows a suggestion, such as Repeat daily?, and one tap sets the repeat.
    • Improved A repeat you type in the composer is a suggestion too: tap it to set the repeat before you save. A repeat with a time, like "every Monday at 9", is still set straight away.
    • Removed The diary no longer shows last night's plan above the evening questions. What you planned is on Today, under From last night.
  5. Android build 131

    A note for tomorrow

    • New The diary asks a fourth question in the evening: What's happening tomorrow? Write one thing per line, and tap any of today's unfinished tasks to add it.
    • New The next morning, Today opens with what you wrote, under From last night. Add puts a line on Today as a task, and nothing is added until you tap it.
    • New The next evening, the diary shows last night's plan above the questions, with what you added and what you finished.
    • New Your note for today is a morning notification on days you wrote one. It is off until you turn it on in Notifications, where you also pick the time.
    • Improved The new question has its own switch in the Diary settings, under Reflections.
    • Fixed The diary reminder arrives at the minute you set. It used to come at the start of that hour.
    • Fixed Editing a thought that has a photo, the keyboard no longer squeezes your words to a sliver. The photos shrink while you type, as they were meant to.
    • Improved While you type in the composer, the Comments row steps aside to give your words more room. The comment button beside the microphone opens comments, as before.
    • Fixed A diary answer you wrote can be cleared: empty it and tap Save. Save used to stay off once the text was gone.
    • Improved Every panel that slides up from the bottom closes when you pull it down from anywhere on it, its list included, not only from the bar at the top.
    • Fixed Pulling the composer down with unsaved writing asks before it discards anything, as the close button does.
    • Improved An empty category is deleted straight away, with Undo.
    • Improved Deleting a category that holds something asks what happens to it: keep it with no category, move it to another category, or put its list items in Trash. Me › Categories and Lists ask the same question.
    • Improved In the diary's writer, the question you are answering sits above your writing and shows in full. It used to be cut short in the top bar.
    • Improved On the Lists board, a card shows up to three lines of its title, so a longer task reads in full.
    • Fixed A long name at the top of a board column is no longer cut short while there is room beside it.
  6. Android build 124

    Tasks is now Lists

    • Improved Everything you capture is a thought and stays on Thoughts, where you can find it. The AI picks its category and nothing else.
    • New Move to Lists in an item's menu puts a thought on a list: its category's list, or No category when it has none. Move to Thoughts takes it back.
    • Improved The Tasks tab is now called Lists, since a list can hold reminders, subscriptions or birthdays as well as things to do.
    • Improved The composer's type chip looks the same on every tab and offers Thought or List. It says List when a date puts the capture on Lists.
    • Removed Auto and Let the AI decide are gone from the composer, and so is the note that said where the AI had filed a capture.
    • Improved Lists shows only the lists that have something on them. An empty list, or one whose items are all done, no longer appears in the list picker or as a board column; choose Done under Status to see finished ones.
    • Improved Categories are listed from A to Z wherever you pick one.
    • New The category filter on Thoughts and Lists shows up to eight of your recent picks at the top.
    • Improved Lists has the same category filter as Thoughts, with a field to find a category by name.
    • Improved The category filter leaves out categories with nothing to show, and says how many it left out.
    • Improved Finding a category by name works with or without accents.
    • New The category filter on Thoughts has New category, as Lists does.
    • Improved New category opens a form that fits the screen with the keyboard up: a name, an icon, the colours in one row, and a description only if you want one. It shows the category as it will look.
    • Improved Editing a category opens the same form from Lists, Me › Categories and a category's settings, so its name, icon, colour and description change in one place.
    • Improved A category name you already use is pointed out as you type.
    • Improved Renaming a tag, adding or importing quotes, adding a focus or a calendar, and importing items into a list use the same form, with its button under the fields.
  7. Android build 119

    One category for each project

    • New Lists and categories are now one thing. A category holds a project's thoughts and its tasks, and you create, rename, recolour or delete it once for both tabs.
    • Improved Each list joined the category it matched, or became a new category, with everything in it and its repeat setting.
    • Improved Picking a category on Thoughts shows its open tasks at the top, with See all to open them on Tasks.
    • Improved “Make it a task” and “Make it a thought” keep the item's category.
    • Improved When the AI files a capture as a task, it also picks the task's category.
    • Improved Deleting a category moves its thoughts and its tasks together, with one Undo for both.
    • Improved The Tasks tab lists the categories that hold tasks first, and the rest under More categories.
    • New Tasks has Stack and Cards views, like Thoughts: each task's full text on a card, with its tick, due date and category, grouped as in List.
    • Improved The top bar on Thoughts and Tasks stays still when you pick a category or a filter. Clear all now sits at the end of the filter row when two or more filters are on.
    • Improved The composer says what will happen to a capture: Auto while the AI decides, Task when a date makes it one, or what you chose. Its title follows: New capture, New task or New thought.
    • Improved An item's menu now starts with Make it a task or Make it a thought, then Complete, Set due date and Set category, which shows the current category.
    • Improved Task cards in Stack and Cards show the due date at the top.
    • Improved Me › Categories counts each category's thoughts and tasks separately.
    • Fixed "Uncategorized" is now "No category" in the filters, the category picker, Archive and Me › Categories, and the swipe tip describes what each swipe does.
  8. Android build 116

Undo that respects your later edits

    • Improved When the AI files something you captured on Thoughts as a task, a note stays at the top of Thoughts saying where it went, with Undo, until you switch tabs.
    • Improved Searching on Thoughts also shows the tasks that match, and searching on Tasks shows the thoughts that match, at the top of the results with See all.
    • Improved Undo now puts back an item's dates, its place and its text as separate parts, and keeps any part you have changed since.
    • Improved When everything an action changed has been edited since, Undo leaves the item alone and says “Couldn't undo: it changed since”.
    • Improved Merging thoughts and Move to Diary are now undone completely or not at all.
    • New When a search on Open tasks misses tasks you have already finished, a “done tasks match” link opens them under Done.
    • Improved Done lists your most recently finished tasks first, and ticking or reopening a task now says so, with Undo.
    • Fixed On the Tasks board, columns run the full height of the screen, and the end of a long column sits clear of the + button.
    • Fixed Exporting to Todoist sends only open tasks, so finished ones no longer arrive there as new, and Notion exports mark finished tasks with a Done checkbox.
    • Fixed If the AI's answer is cut off while filing a capture, the capture stays where it was and is tried again later.
  9. Android build 108

    Tasks gets its own views

    • New The Tasks tab has the same top row as Thoughts: search, a list picker, Status and Tags filters, a calendar, and List, Board and Table views.
    • New Status starts on Open so finished tasks stay out of the way, with filters for Overdue, Due today, Due this week, No date, Priority and Repeating.
    • New Long-press a task, or use ⋮ > Select tasks, to complete, date or move several at once.
    • New When a category and a list share a name, each links to the other: open tasks from Thoughts, thoughts from Tasks.
    • Fixed Ticking a task keeps it under Done instead of sending it to Trash, and finished tasks no longer send reminders or appear in calendar feeds.
    • Improved The phone tab bar now reads Thoughts, Tasks, Today, Diary, Me, matching the desktop sidebar.
    • Improved Comments work the same in the reader and the editor, with the comment box on top, the newest first, and one ⋯ menu for Copy, Edit and Delete.
    • Fixed Saving an edit no longer overwrites an AI filing, transcript or schedule that arrived while the editor was open.
  10. Android build 100

    A thought or a task

    • New Every capture is now either a thought, kept in a category on the Thoughts tab, or a task, kept in a list on the Tasks tab, and the AI decides which as you capture it.
    • New “Make it a task” and “Make it a thought” move an item to the other side, with Undo.
    • Improved Deleting a list keeps its items as tasks in No list, and exports offer Everything, Thoughts or Tasks.
    • Fixed Attached photos keep their shape instead of being cropped to squares, and a single photo shows whole in the reader.
    • New “Choose photos” picks several photos at once, and the photo viewer closes with a swipe down on touch screens.
    • Fixed Lines you type separately now read back as separate lines in the reader, on cards, in comments and in AI answers.
  11. Android build 96

Trash keeps things for 30 days

    • New Trash now keeps things for 30 days before removing them for good, each item shows the days it has left, and anything already older than that stays until October 9.
    • New Trash is grouped by the day things were deleted, with Restore on every row and selection for restoring several at once.
    • Improved Empty trash clears everything at once, and Delete forever asks first.
    • New Archive has search, a category picker and month headings, and Me shows how much is in Archive and Trash.
    • Fixed On Android, turning the phone while recording from a home screen widget no longer restarts the recording timer.
  12. Android build 92

    Choose where Brain looks

    • New Chips on Brain's question box choose whether it searches your Library, Archive and Trash.
    • Fixed Brain knows which thoughts are done, archived or in Trash, and no longer lists finished tasks as still to do.
    • Improved An answer's sources fold into “From N thoughts”, and each one opens in place with Open, Restore or Unarchive.
    • Improved Brain keeps your conversation while the app is open, and a follow-up question builds on the last few turns.
  13. Android build 91

    • Improved “Try another” keeps up to three pictures to choose between, and with no Kindle address saved the sheet asks for one in place or offers “Email it to me instead”.
    • Fixed A phone gets notifications only for the account signed in on it, and signing out stops them.
    • Fixed Switching accounts no longer leaves the last account's Google Calendar events on Today.

    • Improved Your own tags show on cards and in the reader.
    • Fixed A category automation with “Delete after processing” on no longer picks up list items.

    • Fixed An automation set to delete its thoughts after sending waits until the book has actually gone.
  28. Long captures keep all their text
