Frequently asked questions

What are AI credits?

Credits cover the cost of AI features — tag generation, research, weekly insights, merges, automations. Free gets 500/month, Pro gets 10,000/month, and both reset on the 1st. Cheap models (e.g. Gemini Flash) cost ~1 credit per thought; expensive models (e.g. Claude Opus) cost more per call. Pick the model that fits the job.

Can I use my own API key (BYOK)?

Yes — Pro users can paste their own OpenRouter key in Settings. AI requests then route through your account, you pay OpenRouter directly at their rates, and ThoughtFree credits are not deducted. The Pro subscription still covers storage, sync, voice transcription, automation pipelines, EPUB/Kindle export, and everything else non-AI.

What happens if I run out of credits?

AI features pause silently — your thoughts still save, they just won’t get auto-tagged or summarized until credits reset. Pro users can switch to BYOK for uninterrupted AI. No surprise charges, no data loss.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Cancel from the billing portal at any time. You’ll keep access until the end of your billing period.

What happens to my data if I downgrade?

Your data is never deleted. You’ll keep all your thoughts but won’t be able to use premium features like the 10,000-credit allocation or automation pipelines.

Is there a free trial?

The free tier is your trial. Capture up to 100 thoughts per month with 500 AI credits included. Upgrade only when you need more.

How is payment processed?

Payments are securely processed by Stripe via RevenueCat. Your payment data is never stored on our servers.
