Capturing Thoughts

The floating action button (FAB) in the bottom-right corner is your main entry point for capturing thoughts. Tap it to open the capture sheet.

The simplest way to capture a thought:

  1. Tap the FAB (+ button)
  2. Type your thought in the text field
  3. Optionally add a category, tags, or due date
  4. Tap Save

Your thought is saved locally and synced to the cloud automatically. AI processes it in the background to assign a category and emoji.

You can use markdown in your thoughts for formatting. See the full Markdown Formatting guide for details.

Common formatting:

  • **bold** for bold text
  • *italic* for italic text
  • - item for bullet lists
  • - [ ] task for checklists
  • `code` for inline code

Speak your thoughts and ThoughtFree transcribes them in real time.

  1. Tap the FAB
  2. Tap the microphone icon to start recording
  3. Speak naturally — you’ll see live transcription as you talk
  4. Tap Stop when finished
  5. Review the transcription and save

Attach photos or images to any thought:

  1. Tap the FAB
  2. Tap the camera/image icon
  3. Choose from camera, gallery, or files
  4. Add a text note (optional)
  5. Save

Images are automatically compressed to WebP format to save storage. You can attach up to 5 images per thought.

When you capture a thought from the Today view, it automatically gets a due date of today. This is useful for quickly adding tasks to your daily list without manually setting a date.

You can add comments to any existing thought:

  1. Tap a thought to open its detail view
  2. Scroll to the Comments section
  3. Type your comment and submit

Comments are full thoughts themselves — they sync across devices, work offline, and support the same formatting options.

ThoughtFree works offline. Any thoughts you capture while offline are saved locally and automatically synced when you reconnect. You’ll never lose a thought due to poor connectivity.
