ThoughtFree uses AI throughout the app to help you capture, organize, and understand your thoughts.
Available on All Plans
Section titled “Available on All Plans”Emoji Generation
Section titled “Emoji Generation”Every thought automatically gets a relevant emoji based on its content. This provides visual context at a glance.
Basic Categorization
Section titled “Basic Categorization”Thoughts are automatically assigned to one of your categories based on content analysis.
Pro Features
Section titled “Pro Features”Weekly Insights
Section titled “Weekly Insights”AI generates a weekly summary of your thoughts — patterns, themes, and trends it noticed. Check the Insights view weekly.
Obsidian Export
Section titled “Obsidian Export”Export your thoughts in a format compatible with Obsidian vaults for knowledge management.
Research
Section titled “Research”Open any thought and tap Research to get AI analysis:
- Summarize — concise summary of the thought
- Extract insights — key takeaways and observations
- Action items — actionable tasks extracted from the content
- Suggest questions — follow-up questions to explore further
YouTube Research
Section titled “YouTube Research”Paste a YouTube URL as a thought and use Research to:
- Transcribe the video
- Extract key points
- Ask questions about the content
Bulk Research
Section titled “Bulk Research”Select multiple thoughts and run research across all of them. AI provides individual analysis plus a master summary across everything.
Custom Prompts
Section titled “Custom Prompts”Write your own AI prompts to run against your thoughts. This is fully flexible — ask the AI anything about your captured content.
Auto-Tagging
Section titled “Auto-Tagging”AI automatically assigns relevant tags to your thoughts based on content. Combined with auto-categorization, this means your thoughts are fully organized the moment you save them.
Vector Search
Section titled “Vector Search”Semantic search that understands meaning, not just keywords. Search for concepts and find related thoughts even when the exact words don’t match.
Model Selection
Section titled “Model Selection”Choose which AI model powers your processing:
- The default model works well for most tasks
- Alternative models are available through OpenRouter
- You can set per-pipeline model overrides for specialized tasks
Every call debits AI credits based on the model — cheap models (e.g. Gemini Flash) cost ~1 credit per typical call, expensive models (e.g. Claude Opus) cost many times more. Cost previews appear before running bulk or automation actions.
Configure in Settings > AI Processing.
Bring Your Own Key (BYOK)
Section titled “Bring Your Own Key (BYOK)”Pro users can paste an OpenRouter key in Settings → AI Provider. When enabled, every AI feature on this page routes through your OpenRouter account — you pay OpenRouter directly at their rates, and ThoughtFree credits are not deducted. If your key is invalid or throttled, the app surfaces a banner and falls back transparently.
